18-hole golf course plan shelved
Another attempt has failed to put an 18-hole golf course in Fort Saskatchewan.
City Council voted against a request by Councillor Patrick Noyen last week to put a feasibility study for a golf course in the upcoming budget discussions.
The proposal would have looked into an 18-hole golf course in the West River’s Edge park, next to the current dog park.
Most of City Council opposed the plan because it likely impacted the dog park, which they did not want to see lost.
“To take away the dog park is not a wise idea,” said Councillor Gordon Harris.
“I’m not going to go against probably 3,300 homes who have dogs,” agreed Mayor Gale Katchur.
Such a golf course might have worked when it was first proposed 20 years ago, but it won’t work now, Harris added. “Those days have come and gone.”
“I think the area is well used already,” agreed Councillor Birgit Blizzard.
It may be too late for West River’s Edge, but a new golf course might work in the newly annexed area of river valley below Pointe Aux Pins, Katchur added. But that is in the future, she said.
Councillor Brian Kelly was once again in opposition to the majority on Council, disputing the amount of land needed for the golf course, and arguing that our community is desperately short of good golf courses.
“The City of Fort Saskatchewan has the dubious distinction of being the only city in Alberta that doesn’t have an 18-hole golf course,” he said.
Councillor Abitoye also voted in favour of the golf course proposal, but made no comment.
