Golf club gets help with leaking pond
Help is being given to Fort Saskatchewan's golf club.
City Council agreed last week to have administration oversee a geo-technical study into the irrigation pond at the nine-hole golf course.
The pond has been leaking, and its banks eroding since being expanded in 2022, and must be repaired, club officials told City Council on July 8.
Mistakes were made when the pond was expanded, officials said. The previous board and previous manager decided to remove the pond liner and did not replace it.
One year later, a heavy rain caused the embankment to collapse, cutting into a pathway on the eighth hole. Erosion continues, damaging a tee box and more pathways. The pond is also losing nine inches of water a day due to seepage.
The club has investigated several options for repair. Three options have been proposed so far, costing from $96,000 to $338,000. A geo-technical study is needed first to determine the best option, Council was told. It is possible that all three options will be needed, for a total cost of $544,000.
The study will cost up to $25,000. City administration will oversee the study, and cover the cost.
The golf course, opened in 1950, is operated by the non-profit Fort Saskatchewan Golf and Curling Club.
