Fort targets noisy vehicles this year
Noisy vehicles beware, Fort Saskatchewan municipal enforcement members are conducting noise and speed stops this summer.
The department held its first Traffic Enforcement Noise/Speed Reduction exercise in May, and plans to hold several more each month through until fall, says Sgt. B Sharpe.
The May 29 exercise resulted in 47 tickets including some for noise, speed, vehicle equipment and administrative violations.
The program will continue to target noise, speeding, stunting, general equipment violations, seatbelts, suspended drivers and other document offences, Sharpe says.
Tough new rules for noisy vehicles were approved by Fort Saskatchewan City Council in 2022.
Sound meters will now be used to enforce the new bylaw, which comes with $250 and $500 fines for loud vehicles. The new law defines the maximum noise level allowed at 92 decibels for vehicles at idle, and 96 decibels when at any RPM greater than idle.
Most motorcycles generate 95 decibels and sounds greater than 85 decibels will damage hearing after exposure of two hours or more, according to the U.S. Centres for Disease Control website.
