Old JRC arena like new again
Old JRC arena like new again
Fort Saskatchewan's oldest arena is now almost like brand new. The Jubilee Recreation Centre officially reopened Monday following an $18 million renovation.
The 60-year-old structure now boasts new, accessible washrooms for players and the public, a big new lobby and concession. The concession also now includes a weatherproof counter to serve the adjoining ball park in summer.
The Minor Sports Association also has new office space.
The new washrooms are particularly welcome, Mayor Gale Katchur noted. "When you have seating for over 2,500 people having two stalls in the ladies room, and I assume the same for men, you can picture the line-ups"
Council chose to renovate the Jubilee rather than add another arena to the Dow Centennial Centre, Katchur also noted. "Sometimes decisions are difficult, but keeping existing facilities upgraded means the facility life expectancy is extended for years."
"I would like to thank project staff for keeping the ice surface useable during construction to minimize the loss of ice time," she said. "I was here for a tournament and was extremely impressed with the functionality for the teams."
"For those who have lived in Fort Saskatchewan and either played or watched their children or grandchildren play here, the JRC has served you well and with these upgrades, will continue to serve the community well into the future."
