Pro-Canada petition gains strength
The local effort to keep Alberta in Canada is gathering steam this week.
Volunteers with Forever Canada have been canvassing door to door and brought the petition to Legacy Park again this week, and expect to be next to the Farmers' Market again this Thursday and every Thursday until the market season ends on Sept. 25.
Canvassers will also be at the Historic Precinct this Saturday during the 150th anniversary of the Fort and Alberta Days celebrations. Look for their table near the statue of Fort founder William D. Jarvis.
Forever Canada was launched by former Alberta deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk earlier this month after his citizen initiative petition was approved by Elections Alberta. The petition asks that the question "Do you agree that Alberta should remain in Canada?" be put to Alberta voters.
Organizers have until Oct. 28 to gather at least 293,976 names. Only eligible electors can sign the petition, which is to say they must be Canadian citizens at least 18 years of age living in Alberta.
More than 3,000 Albertans have been registered as canvassers as of this week.
