Premier attacks Fort teacher

A local teacher is taking heat from Premier Danielle Smith and other conservative pundits over a two-minute audio clip taken from his social studies class.

In the clip, the teacher is talking about angry right-wing rhetoric, and includes the term "Fuck Trudeau." This is the only profanity in the clip.

The clip was shared on an Alberta separatist podcast Thursday, Jan. 15, and Smith responded less than three hours later saying she was "deeply disappointed."

"Students are there to learn math, language, science and critical thinking based on the approved curriculum, not to be subjected to profanity, partisan attacks or insults toward Alberta's ethical energy workers and their families," Smith added.

Elk Island Catholic School officials state that an investigation has been launched regarding this matter.

"The conduct depicted in the recording does not align with the core values of our Division in recognizing the inherent value and dignity of all people and requires further investigation," board chair Le-Ann Ewaskiw said in a post released this week. "EICS expects all educators to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and to present the curriculum in an unbiased, respectful manner."

St. André Bessette Catholic School principal Scott Walker issued a statement to parents warning of the release of the recording, and calling it out of context.

Students and parents are defending the teacher, noting that the recording, which only covers two minutes of a 70 minute class, does not include his discussion of extreme rhetoric from the Left.

"He is by far one of the best teachers in this school," writes one parent. "My daughter says she actually learns things in his class and he is very engaged and very informative on all sides."

That same parent attacks the critics. "This is teaching our kids nothing but hate, anger, division and retaliation and extreme behaviours that this very teacher is teaching them not to be like."

"Profanity laced. Lol. He quoted a popular sign," another parent posted. "Kids in his class have said he poked fun at both sides in this conversation. Of course that's not shown."

"I have witnessed how amazing he is and have friends from that school that still go there that say good shit about him," a former student posted. "All you old ass people that know nothing, just taking a very clearly clipped audio recording that doesn't even have video to it from a 15 or 16 year-old kid is ridiculous. Like, grow the hell up."
