Highway widening still a priority

An attempt to remove Veterans' Way widening from Fort Saskatchewan City Council's priority list failed this week.

Councillor Gale Katchur put forward a motion Tuesday, Oct. 13, to remove the highway widening project from the list. The $60 million project is not worthwhile, she said.

"We have other priorities," Katchur said.

All six other members of City Council disagreed, however.

"For me this is a huge priority for City Council," said Mayor Lisa Makin. Industry has been asking for it, she noted. Increased traffic on our highway corridor also results in more short-cutting through residential neighbourhoods.

"It's about safety," she said.

Veterans' Way must be widened to meet growing traffic, agreed Councillor Gordon Harris. "We have reached capacity and it's going to get worse."

Council has been asking for provincial funding for this project since 2009, and has yet to succeed. An additional lane will also make one or more pedestrian underpasses necessary.
