Fort ready for Canada Day fun

Get ready for another full day of fun as Fort Saskatchewan celebrates Canada Wednesday, July 1.

Begin the day with a free pancake breakfast at the Legion parking lot from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. Get there early as this is a popular event.

The car show and the Farmers' Market both then begin at 10 a.m. The market is at its usual spot in the CN Station parking lot and the car show takes up much of downtown along 100 Avenue, 102 Street and 103 Street.

The parade starts as usual at 11 a.m. The route is very different this year, however. The parade begins at 108 Street and 100 Avenue, travelling north from there to 101 Avenue, west to 101 Avenue, south to 99 Avenue and then back to 108 Street.

This change may help parking somewhat, but wise fans will avoid trying to park anywhere near the downtown and take the free local bus service that day. Catch a bus every 15 minutes along all of the Pineview ring road, Alderson Park in Westpark, and along Southfort Drive. Park and ride parking is at Alderson Park and Chris' No Frills. The service starts at 7 a.m. and ends at midnight.

Taking a bicycle? Bike stands will be located behind the bandshell in Legacy Park.

Enjoy an afternoon of fun starting at 1 p.m. at Legacy Park with entertainment, inflatables and food trucks. You can also get a free tour of the old fort and museum.

The official Canada Day opening ceremony takes place at 1 p.m. at the bandshell.

Fort Saskatchewan's own cannon fires at 3:30 p.m and at 5:00 p.m. behind the old fort.

Wide Mouth Mason is on stage at the bandshell starting at 7 p.m with guests The Buckleys and Sarah Vanderzon.

The day wraps up with fireworks at the Rotary Amphitheatre starting at 10:45 p.m. Once again, be aware that parking is limited and that local transit will take you there for free.
